Fans of Tom Waits, check out The Gunshy for a real treat. The
Gunshy is actually Matt Arbogast with a host of guests.
Predominantly however, the record's focus is Arbogast's
Waits-like voice which sounds so much like him, it's amazing.
The songs range from slow, morose pieces like the first one, "I
Am Not Who I Used to Be," to the Dexy's Midnight Runner-ish
"Last Songs."
Argobast gets full marks for his lyrics as each song is well
supplied with verses that are far from sparse. Drawing vivid
pictures, his lyrics are full of great imagery. Here's an
example, "She's my whiskey in the late evening / That keeps
me from smiling / That first cup of coffee in the morning / And
though it's taken some mistaken turns / I think perhaps I have
earned / That nicotine that I don't need / That arm around my
back when I'm freezing."
Bleak and soul sapping, the songs are still comforting
nonetheless, sort of like an offered raincoat in a downpour. |
