Stutter's self-titled CD was picked from a super-long list of
CDs that have been submitted to NowOnTour for review -
and have somehow been looked over. I picked it on the
band's name alone, knowing nothing about them or their
sound. I've done this a few times before - where I'll pick a
disc from the band name or the album title. It allows for that
element of surprise and gives me a chance to broaden my
horizons. I've ended up with some pleasant surprises and
some god-awful shit by doing so. This, oddly enough isn't
either of those.
I didn't know how to react when I received my package of
review CDs in the mail and Stutter's bio fell out with a picture
of them sayin' they were an all-out pop band! Luckily, they
aren't a boy/girl group pop act like Backstreet Boys or
Pussycat Dolls, nor are they rhythmic/hip-hop oriented like
Christina Aguilera or Justin Timberlake. Stutter actually play
their instruments to create their retro 80's pop rock
sound.
In their bio, they're described as a mixture between Blondie,
Gwen Stefani, Republica, Duran Duran and Garbage,
amongst others. I agree with all of those references, but in
my opinion I would compare them to any band that
performed in an 80's teen movie - in the house party scene
or the pool side bash at the rich kid's house, or any 80's or
early 90's TV show when they ran out of ideas so the cast
members formed a band. (Think Saved By The
Bell's fake band "Zach Attack").
Nothing about this album bowls me over but the highlights
would have to include the incredible vocals on "Badboy
Spell" and the heartfelt lyrics of "Sad Eyes."
Though a far cry from my what's in my CD Player this week,
I chose not to run in fear of this review. Stutter are very
good at what they do, and this is a quality album as a whole
(especially reaching out with a cover of Devo's genius "Girl U
Want").
It's fun filled synth-driven retro-style pop rock that I wish
would take back the airwaves from the crap that plagues
pop radio today. Though not for me, I would encourage
anyone who is into the aforementioned bands - or just pop
fans in general - to further research this band and see if
they are for you. I don't dig pop, but Stutter is cool by me. |
