The question is not what I can say about this album, but
how much I can praise it.
Kultur Shock's Koolarrow full-length debut,
We've Come To Take Your Jobs
Away has firmly secured a spot in my top three
records of 2006 - and has a good chance of landing the top
spot.
We've Come To Take Your Jobs Away is one of
the most unique, refreshing, mind-blowing, diverse,
non-catagorizable, well-put-together, all-around ass kickin'
records I've had the honor of hearing in years! This CD is in
a league of it's own - where it reigns as grand
champion.
The multi-cultural band has members hailing from Bosnia,
Bulgaria, Japan and the good 'ole USA, but they all came
together in Seattle. They are signed to ex-Faith No More
bassist Billy Gould's label. Gould himself produced the
album.
Fusing musical styles ranging from Heavy Metal, Salsa, Ska,
Reggae, Indian, Balkan Traditional, Arabic and Punk,
amongst others, Kultur Shock have blended classic Middle
Eastern/Euro-Turkish stylings with contemporary, edgy rock
providing a treat for any listener's ears. To dissect this
album and give a song-for-song description would take far
too long, as all tracks are of equal greatness - there's not a
weak one in the bunch. I'll just give you my
favorites.
"God Is Busy" is energetic, funny and balls-to-the-wall
rockin'. You can bang your head, shake your ass, move your
hips or pound your fist in the air. Vocalist Srdjan "Gino"
Yevdjevich says it all when he boasts, "God is busy, MAY I
HELP YOU?!?!?" "Gino Loves You" is a hilarious song including
the spoofing lyric, "Jesus Loves Me" while letting the listener
know how Gino really feels about things.
My personal favorite is, hands-down, "Sarajevo," which to
me is the epitome of greatness. Eastern European fiddle
accompanies groove-heavy, distorted guitar rhythms and
horns for a song that will find you on the dance floor either
moshing or belly-dancing.
This album will probably never go multi-platinum, or even
gold for that matter. Don't let the accolades presented to the
large amounts of undeserving, mainstream, crap bands
detour you from owning this gem. For this album to be
compared to System Of A Down or Gogol Bordello (and
other bands that mix Middle Eastern vibes into contemporary
rock) is utter hogwash, those bands have never dreamed of
having as much talent as Kultur Shock.
With micro-tonic vocals, ferocious grunts, powerful yells,
tribal chants, polyrhythmic drumbeats, chaotic time
signatures and tempo changes, a plethora of stringed
instruments and storytelling lyrics, Kultur Shock take what's
known as "World Music" to a whole new universe.
To sum it up, I dare say you aren't a true musician if you
don't buy this album. It will be just as incredible and
innovative in 2030 as it will be when it hits stores in October
2006. We've Come To Take Your Jobs Away is
an album that should reside in History books. |
