Blood Sweat & Towers is the debut album from
young Brit band Towers Of London. Not knowin' a bloody lick
about this band I was instantly drawn to the packaging of a
black CD sleeve with large reflective silver letters with white
stars. To say it's eye grabbing is an understatement. I
cracked open the wrapper and looked at the inlay pics to see
these young kids dressed in leather sporting big hair and
Converse Chucks and thinkin' to myself, "This is either
gonna be the best thing since The Darkness or they're gonna
suck." I can't say it's one or the other, but there are some
surprises.
A majority of the CD's that are sent to NowOnTour come with
a bio of the band. What's really strange is after seein' the
photos on the inside and listenin' to the first three songs I
had already made some mental comparisons of what these
guys remind me of, a crossbreed of Guns 'N Roses and the
Sex Pistols. I then picked up the bio, and it read, "Fuelled by
a shared love of Never Mind The
Bollocks and
Appetite For Destruction." Damn I'm good!
Celebration shot for me!
The first song "I'm A Rat" is very punk-flavored, almost like
Rancid, but becomes too repetitive and eventually looses
steam. "Air Guitar" follows up with a catchy chorus of "I
played air guitar and the place shook over." This song is fun
and takes me back to bein' a young rock wanna-be, playin'
air guitar blowin' out my speakers. (Note: I'm a drummer
but I love to play air guitar. Most of my friends who play
guitar play a mean air drum kit. Who knows why? That's just
the way it is.)
Ok, I'll admit that there's somethin' still very juvenile about
me but I'm a sucker for a good song with "Fuck" in the title.
It's gotta be done right, though, or else it loses all credibility
and becomes a lame attempt to sell records to young kids -
and dudes like me. There are two versions of "Fuck It Up" on
this album. To me the acoustic version is better than the
rock version - done in a very tastefully tacky manner, just
the way I like it! I'd love to see these guys perform this
live.
This CD is chock full of rock anthem songs, teenage rebellion
and good times, bringin' back the carefree days of the '80s
when songs weren't all about your uncle touchin' your pee
bug and coin purse, or daddy beatin' you down before dinner
time. It's about takin' life not too seriously and livin' for the
moment, and I, for one, love that shit. The music itself would
only garner 3.5 of 5 rating, but with the extravagant
packaging, a staggering 15 song count and two bonus videos
that really show what the band is all about, I grant an extra
half sign for the overall album.
Not bad fellas, if you're gonna be rock, then be rock to the
fullest! |
