[sigh] Yet again the NowOnTour home office has sent me
another Straightedge Hardcore band to review. But what's
this?!? I like it! I really like it! That's right, I'm not running a
temperature and I'm not on any mind-altering drugs, I
genuinely like True At All Cost by Erie, PA's
xRepresentx.
Now, I've said before in other reviews that I normally don't
like anything bands of Straightedge persuasion stand for or
sing about, and the thought of any band putting their name
between x's makes me cringe, I can't force myself to not dig
this band. They're that damn good!
True At All Costs is aggression to the tenth
power, plus one. I moshed so much while typing my first
paragraph I had to go back and edit as it looked somethin'
like this:
Yett agin the NowOnTour homr JADJUNNJF ADD D offfice has

I couldn't stay still for the life of me. Think I'm bullshittin'?
Pick up this record and try to type up somethin'
legible.
This album just doesn't give up. Like a pit bull, it grabs you
by the throat, sinks it's teeth in and crushes your windpipe
with its sheer power. Twelve tracks - all shorter than three
minutes long - bleed into one another with either distortion,
feedback or a massive drum roll. It's rapid fire with no
chance to breathe between songs.
The album kicks off with "Dead City" before blasting into
"Live It Up," which has a cool spoken-word message at the
end. The longest song, "Infection," clocks in at a whopping
2:44 and just happens to be my favorite cut on the disc.
Groove, groove and more groove!
This album is Straightedge and straight forward. I don't need
to break it down song for song. The jewel case came with a
big yellow sticker stating "For fans of Buried Alive,
Ringworm, Until The End and Earth Crises." I'll have to take
their word for it, seein' as how I've never listened to any of
those bands. I personally would compare xRepresentx's
sound to that of the first two Biohazard records. It's enough
punk for the punk rockers yet heavy enough for the metal
crowd. Big guitar chords, group chorus chants,
heart-pounding bass lines and machine gun driven drums
make for a musical adrenaline rush reminiscent of
skydiving.
Be very careful while listening to this CD in your vehicle, as
high speeds and swerving may occur. 'No drugs' works for
this band, and it comes across in their sound.
With all that being said, I must tip my hat to the guys in the
band for showing me it is possible for me to like a
Straightedge band. Much respect for creating such a great
record that can even win over hardnosed, opinionated
assholes such as I. |
