I love Rock N' Roll, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and all things
associated with them. Though heavy in sound, Straightedge
bands usually annoy the shit outta me with their preachy
"our scene" elitism - no drugs, no drink, crime free
community, monogamous lifestyles and occasional religious
overtones. That's fine for some people but not for
me.
Cincinnati-based Suffocate Faster is full of all of the above,
with the exception the last one, thankfully. Oh well. I'll listen
to this for whatever it's worth and judge it on musicality
alone. That seems the only just thing to do in this
case.
The lyrics are printed inside, so you can get the full
"message" of what this band is all about. Songs like "Taste
My Steel" and "The Beginning" (musically, the albums
strongest song) are full of "fuck you's," "fuck your drugs,"
"fake ass wanna be's" and so on and so forth. If you don't
get it by then, the rest of the songs will follow up with pretty
much the same themes, so maybe they'll sink in.
Musically, this CD is average. Chunky grooves, blood
gurgling vocals, punchy kick drums and big, heavy guitar
riffs. Not bad, but even if they weren't a Straightedge band I
still wouldn't be all that impressed.
I actually listened to Don't Kill The Messenger
and blocked out as many of the lyrics as I could - but I still
wasn't moved. In all fairness, I must say that any fan of
Suffocate Faster's style and genre may want to check this
album out. The band bio and sticker on the album's jewel
case recommends this for fans of bands like Hatebreed, Full
Blown Chaos, Earth Crisis and Terror. Yet another four
reasons I don't dig this band's style.
[Note: I actually did get a copy of xRepresentx's new album
in the same package as the one this came in. They are also
on 1981 Records and a Straightedge band. However, I
actually enjoyed their CD - so I guess
there's always an exception to every rule.]
I will recommend to all lovers and admirers of Straightedge
bands to do more research on this band to see if it's your
thing. Me personally, I'm gonna toss in my Isabelle's Gift
album, mix some Wild Turkey and Sun Drop, light up a
cigarette and see what kind of shit I can get into. |
