Danko Jones is the hardest working man in the world. Whether
it is chasing chicks, hosting a radio show, touring around the
world, or pumping out albums at a speed that even shocked
me, he is too busy for sleep, and has appropriately titled his
latest album Sleep Is The Enemy.
Unfortunately for Danko, the lack of sleep probably weakened
this album. They also added a new drummer December-ish,
and that could be a possible reason for the weakness as well.
Compared to past works, especially We Sweat
Blood, this album just doesn't match up to the previous
level of genius achieved by Danko Jones, and for first listeners
I highly suggest you start off with a different album.
Just like everything else Danko has created, this album is
highly confrontational (see lyrics for "The Finger") and macho.
All Danko Jones albums follow the same theme: women are
evil but necessary, and Sleep Is The Enemy is no
different. The vocals are all about women in one way or
another, but each is done in their own respected
way.
"She's Drugs" is awful, and so is "Natural Tan." With that aside,
the rest of the album is typical of Danko Jones, but really no
different or much better than the past albums. Tracks that
stand out are "Sticky Situation," "Invisible," and "First Date"
because they actually step it up a little bit. "Sticky Situation" is
classic Danko on caffeine, "Invisible" is just complete
balls-to-the-wall, and "First Date" is catchy and clever - again,
classic Danko.
Despite the few jewels, overall, I was mostly disappointed with
this album. I still thoroughly enjoyed it, because Danko Jones is
a fresh listen from anything else that exists. However, next
time, let's hope he allows himself a little more time to create
something better than the last, which shouldn't be hard since
this is now the album to beat. |
