If the scene ever needed a band that may be too pretentious for its own good, it's The Sound Of Animals Fighting. The "secret" collaborative second full-length effort from Anthony Green of Saosin with members of Chiodos and RX Bandits among other bands finds itself hitting some right notes and many that should've just stayed in their GarageBand programs on Lover, The Lord Has Left Us.
The album starts out strong with "Skullflower." The composition of "Skullflower" could've easily made it on Bjork's Vespertine with its tranquil feel and Sanskrit chants. The next track, "My Horse Must Lose," sounds like it could've been stolen from Radiohead's beat machine but then turns into a very beautiful section that could stand on it's own by the end of the track.
After that, it all goes downhill in an avalanche of electronic blips, odd samples and non-sense singing and foreign spoken word. Not even the melodic vocals of Craig Owens of Chiodos can save a disaster like "Horses In The Sky," which honestly just makes the song that much more of a headache to get around.
I can understand the idea of getting a whole bunch of your friends in different bands collaborating on an album, but to me, all Lover, The Lord Has Left Us is just nine different dudes taking turns adding their own tracks while getting high together. There are moments of striking artistic gold, but they never last long enough during a song to want to invest in them. This is a perfect reason why some side projects should just stay in the privacy of one's own home. |
