The debut record by Living Things is like a bundle of compressed air, bottled up just waiting for you to drop it in a CD player to explode. The band is made up of three brothers; Lillian, Even and Bosh Berlin, rounded out by a friend Corey Becker. Apparently the boys' father put down carpet at traveling carnivals, so the band would follow and set up at the different locations.
There is a variety of sounds going on with this band. According to their mission statement, they are at once, "anxious and ill at ease." I, in fact, didn't think very much of this record on the first spin or two. There's something about it that kept me from putting it down however, and now I like it a lot. The first cut "Bombs Below" starts things off with a bang, sounding like an old Canadian band, Junkhouse. In a lot of ways, they sound like Steve Jones' old band Chequered Past.
"I Owe" really stands out with its punk-like chords and discontent displayed in the lyrics. "Bom Bom Bom" is far and away the best cut here, strutting along confidently for a verse or two before the bass really kicks in on the chorus. "New Year" with its sleepy vocals is another winner as is sparkling "March in Daylight."
Steve Albini produced the record, so there's a solid sound for the set, with nice beefy bass and great separation between the vocals and drums. |
