When I went to put this album on, I swear the cover moved a
bit when I went to grab it. After the disc hit the stereo I think I
understand what was going on. There's so much energy packed
into this record I think it cannot help it but move.
This is the first U.S. release from Canada's The Trews who
have already done damage to the charts there with six Top 10
singles and two gold albums. Produced by legendary
studio-meister Jack Douglas, Den Of Thieves has
already proved its mettle up north, buoyed by the band's
sizzling live show. The band is made up of Colin MacDonald
(vocals, rhythm guitar), John-Angus MacDonald (lead & rhythm
guitars), Jack Syperek (bass) and Sean Dalton
(drums).
From the very first note of this record, it's as if the band is on
flames and they're running around to extinguish things. "Fire
Up Ahead" is a flat-out road rocker with a bouncy constitution
that must level college dance floors.
"Cry" is kind of Wallflowers-ish with Colin MacDonald's plaintive
vocals drawing you in. "I Can't Say" changes things up nicely
with a piano-driven intro that is in sort of R.E.M./Pearl Jam
territory (vocal-wise). Finally as with most of the record, the
song can't do anything else but pick up the pace. "So She's
Leaving" is an excellent song with a gritty guitar line and
MacDonald wailing over top. The Tracy Bonham song (the only
cover on the record) is a great choice and fits it in with the
band's sound like a glove.
There are 15 tracks on here with no filler fluff. Look out people,
here come those canucks again. If you like plain, no-frills rock
and roll that is way more elevated than Nickelback, look no
further than The Trews. |
