This is just a tremendously gorgeous record. If there is anybody with a more beautifully pure voice than Linda Ronstadt, please point her out because I'd like to hear her. This is the second record for the 10-time Grammy winner with noted Cajun singer Ann Savoy, who previously recorded Evangeline Made in 2002. That record was nominated for a Grammy and it's easy to see why because continuing in its footsteps is this terrific disc packed with 16 songs. The material goes from Cajun-flavored music to pop, bluegrass and country, all blending into a soothing aural blanket that wraps around your ears and gives them a loving hug.
There is minimal musical accompaniment on many tracks, which allow the duo's exquisite voices to blend into harmonious heaven. Each sings lead on a number of songs. There are many highlights on here but you can start with the title track, which is the first song. The sparse mandolin sets the Cajun mood before the vocals come in setting up a moody backdrop that is only totally realized with the singing. The fiddle and other strings round it off nicely.
"I Can't Get Over You" is a shimmering diamond that features Ronstadt while "Marie Mouri" spotlights Savoy. There is probably no better song on here than the cover of the Left Banke's classic, "Walk Away Renee" that is simply excellent, and is the first single from the record.
The duo are joined by a cast of notable musicians such as Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Sam Bush (mandolin), Joel Savoy (acoustic guitar and fiddle), Sam Broussard (acoustic guitar), Byron House (bass), Dirk Powell (harmonica, bass and accordion), Krista Wilkinson (viola), Chas Justus (acoustic guitar), Andrea Zonn (violin) and Kirstin Wilkinson (strings). |
