By the time this review is posted, More Than A
Few by Atlanta hardcore punk band The Loose
Skrews will be a tad over two years old. However, the first
priority of NowOnTour is to give unsigned bands much
needed press and publicity. I saw and met this band at
Springwater Supper Club and Lounge in Nashville, TN. After
having my head ripped off I talked with the band and got a
CD off them. This band tours as much as possible, DIY.
Therefore, when I see a good band and think the world
should know about them, I feel the need to do what I can to
help their cause.
I've never been a huge fan of punk but these guys bridge
the gap of punk and metal just enough for me to enjoy it.
Mixing the likes of The Exploited, The Ramones, G.G. Allin
and Motorhead, there's not a soft spot to be found on this
record. On top of it all, the album is chock full of songs about
one of my favorite pass-time hobbies, drinkin'!
"All I Got" also hits close to home with lyrics I can fully
relate to like "Ain't got no goddamn money/Ain't got no
goddamn hope" and "Ain't got no goddamn future/Ain't got
no goddamn plans." The chorus boasts "I don't need your
fuckin' sympathy/All I got to offer you is me!" I'm far from a
"normal" person so this song just touches my heart in a
special way. I love this album for its music and inspiring
lyrics like "First you dream and then you DIE DIE DIE DIE!"
from the song "First You Dream." That's just poetic fuckin'
justice right there.
"Gonna Get Drunk" starts off with a tiny riff of the Poison
song "Talk Dirty To Me" and then borrows the lines "I'd like
to raise a toast to the folks who are breakin' their backs
every day/If wantin' the good life is such a crime/Lord then
put me away" from the song "Nothin' But A Good
Time."
This album is seventeen songs deep with three covers
including a punk version of "Heard It In A Love Song" by The
Marshall Tucker Band, "7 Year Itch" by The Schitz and the
granddaddy of 'em all being Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer,"
which is fuckin' golden. They also rule that song in their live
show and make the crowd piss themselves in
disbelief.
A little old by review standards, I stand by "better late than
never." This is a superior album by an exceptional band that
will never receive a golden or platinum album award. I'm
sure the band could give a shit less and would be happy if
the RIAA garnered it with the plastic status for X-amount of
copies sold. This is easily one of the best self-released
albums I've ever heard.
More Than A Few is about as much fun as you
can legally have listening to a CD. Vocalist Roger "Rotger
Rotgut" has some insane lyrics that just ooze everything
Punk Rockers and Rock N' Rollers alike relate to.
The band is supposedly recording its new CD and when it's
done I'll bring ya the word like MTV News. You'll hear it
(boing da boing doing ding doing dong da dat) FIRST! (doo
doo doo doo doo doo). Until then, do the band - as well as
yourself - a huge favor and pick up this diamond in the
rough. Introduce yourself to The Loose Skrews. |
