Wow! The two words that best describe Unexpect are "musical mayhem."

Montreal's Unexpect is back with their third release, In A Flesh Aquarium. To my ears, this sounds like the soundtrack to the worst nightmare you'll ever have, and I mean that as a compliment. This album has me tongue-tied and scatterbrained just trying to conjure up clever ways to describe its menacing content. I'm gonna try my best.

Imagine, if you can, mixing Slipknot, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Evanescence, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mudvayne, some jazz and opera and a dash of anything else, and you'd end up with this album. To do a song-by-song is unthinkable and I must admit I don't have the balls to take on such a task. My only gripe with the album is that it burns out fast. Eight songs instead of ten would have been a plenty for this style of music.

In A Flesh Aquarium is the true definition of music as art. Demented, warped, abstract, insane and twisted, this album is like that painting you stare at for hours and keep seeing things you never noticed before...it's also like an ink blot that makes a butterfly - only substitute blood for the ink. Beautiful yet terrifying, yet you can't pull yourself away from its grasp.

Each of the seven members of this band is at the top of his or her game and somehow all came together to form Unexpect. This is art made by perfectionists who dare to think outside of the musical conformist box. I would not recommend this album for amateur musicians or occasional music listeners. I place In A Flesh Aquarium in the "love/hate" category, and it's as simple as that. This album is geared towards the music fanatics and experienced listeners. It should also come with some kind of warning label - not for lyrical content, but for people who are prone to seizures or may have potential serial killer tendencies.

I don't know if my review has served any purpose in explaining Unexpect's latest creation. I do hope, in some small way, it will intrigue you enough to do more digging to further introduce yourself to this band and it's unusual concepts. This is art!
