I pride myself on being a hard rock/metal guru with a vast database of most any band one would care to know about. When I get a really killer metal CD to review by what I think is a fresh upstart band only to find they've been around for a while, I'm slightly dumbfounded. I guess one truly does learn somethin' new everyday. In this case, my undivided attention has been brought to All That Remains and their latest effort The Fall Of Ideals.

This album comes on like a blasting cannon, so I advise the listener to not be holding a cup of hot coffee just after putting this in your player. The first thing apparent is the staggering drum work of Shannon Lucas (who, as of this review, has left the band and has been replaced by Jason Costa of Diecast). "The Calling" is just the tip of the iceberg on this disc and it's a damn fine way to get the ball rolling. This song is punishing in every possible way.

"Not Alone" combines great vocal harmonies with angry growling, more pummeling drums, precision guitar harmonies and a phenomenal guitar solo. Each song keeps getting better and better. If you don't believe me, third track "It Dwells In Me" will close the door on any speculation of doubt. As a drummer, I'm still in absolute awe of Mike Martin and Oli Herbert's guitar work.

Track six, "The Weak WIlled," is heavier than a elephant's ball sack on a 110 degree day on the Savannah. I don't have any scientific proof of the heaviness of that, but I'm sure you can look on the internet and find some dumb Sumbitch that's researched it for one reason or another - and will say that it's heavy. This song is by far the most demonic on the album.

I didn't get liner notes with this CD so I could be incorrect in stating that Phil Labonte provided all the vocals on this disc. If it is the case that Labonte is the prime contributor, then I have the utmost respect for this cat and give highest praise for such dynamic work. This dude is just all over the map with the vocals. If backing vocals were provided by other members, then good job still, but you should include that in your bio and get your due credit.

I'm so glad I finally found out about this band. The Fall Of Ideals is a fine-tuned piece of work from a well-oiled machine of a band. Great songs, recording, production, vocals, etc. It's all here. I would highly recommend All That Remains for fans of Lamb Of God and Trivium. Hell, I dare say I like All That Remains a little better.
