Combining some magnetic beats with a brassy MC is what you get
with Spank Rock. This Baltimore crew is made up primarily of MC
Spank Rock (aka Naeem Juwan) and producer XXXChange.
“YoYoYoYoYo” has a whole Baskin-Robbins range of sounds, going
from the lewd and crude to ass-shakin’ free-for-alls.
XXXChange employs a batch of interesting beats on the opener
“Back Yard Betty” which should be a club killer. Spank switches up
his delivery throughout the record, going from mono beat vocals
(“Back Yard Betty”) to double-speed verses (“IMC” “Coke & Wet”) to
riding the beat with change-ups along the way (“Chilly Will”). “Rick
Rubin” is quite good and “Sweet Talk” is one of the standouts of the
set, breaking down like a Prince meets Sly Stone
funkathon.
The production is top notch with a lot of strange sounds mixed in
with the beats. The vocal splicing in “Top Billin’ From Far Left” is
pretty cool and the slow speed vocal on the outro stands
out.
There’s just something about this record that seems lefts of centre
from what’s out there right now. I kept this on repeat for almost
the whole day while writing this and I still wasn’t tired of it. This is
my first experience with the Spank Rock guys but it won’t be my
last. |
