Bono, is that you singing? The Edge? Is that you playing? Or,
perhaps not The Edge, but something equally precipitous? The
Chasm? The Ledge? The Berm? No, I guess it isn't you guys, you
U2 superstars, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, Jr. et al, but, WOW,
you, Sirens Sister, sound so oh so similar to those Irish
rockers.
Sirens Sister, a new band from Seattle, has a new album,
Echoes From The Ocean Floor, and if you close
your eyes listening to it you can imagine Bono blaring into the
microphone, wrap around sunglasses on snug, pants on snug,
his little bum be-bopping around a big stage in Barcelona, or
some place equally exotic, thrilling be-bopping fans. Of course
it would be more than his little bum on stage but you
understand what I'm trying to say. Sirens Sister is so much U2
that they've in fact answered that question. "U2?" "Yes, us, too.
We know how to rock!"
Fronted by Zach Davidson, formerly of Vendetta Red, the band is
making their names known due to local touring and a popular
MySpace page. They also sound just like U2 which helps them, in
that U2 is the one of the most popular bands in the history of
the world. It also hurts them because, well, they sound just like
U2 and, you know, that band already exists.
What's more, it's vintage U2 (late 80s, early 90s) rather than U2's
new stuff, which makes it even more confusing for the casual
listeners. "Hey, Jonathan, what's that you're listening too? A
bootleg U2 album from their Joshua Tree days?"
"No, it's Sirens Sister. They're a new band that's been on the
scene for, oh, about 40 minutes." "That's weird. It's good but it's
just like U2 from their Joshua Tree days and we
already own The Joshua Tree." "That's true." "So
why should we listen to this group?" "Because one can always
have another Joshua tree? I mean, it's great to own a couple
monocotyledonous trees, don't you think?" "Uh…"
Monocotyledonous maybe. Monotonous, a little. The songs on
the album, from "Kissing Her" to "Hold On, "Should've Known," to
"So Long," are all technically accomplished songs, all sung with
gusto and a sense of accomplishment (even though it's their first
album), but they all also run together into a U2 stew. Good stew,
to be sure, but stew nevertheless when one wants a four-course
meal. Or, at least, something other than a monocotyledonous
tree. How about another kind of tree, Sirens Sister? Like
something in the Cycadaceae family? |
