Using her guitar alternately as a pet you stroke for calming comfort
or a psychological stringed punching bag, Julie Loyd delivers a
folk-rock (or maybe more accurately rock-folk) wallop with
All That You Ask For.
Barely out of the starting gate prediction (though this is Loyd's
fourth CD): Big, big, positive noise is soon to be generated by this
artist who claims a handful of spots in North California, New York
and Chicago as hometowns. More raspy than Sheryl Crow, less
shocking than Michelle Shocked, Loyd's the shiny, aesthetically
pleasing flip side of a worn penny that's grown so commonplace
that it's often overlooked - except for when you're stuck at the
check-out, just a couple of cents short of your tab.
If there's any justice in the world in general (and the music world in
particular), Loyd's about to be appreciated (like the aforementioned
pennies) for her unassuming style and profound talents. This is
especially true of cut four, "Fate Says He's Sorry," with its emotive
picking, barebones melody and yank-the-scab raw lyrics, and the
equally revealing, "Against the Odds," which she calls her personal
PSA not to date her. (Disclaimer: this CD shouldn't be
recommended to anyone yearning for a soothing nightcap.
Recorded live, the intrusive applause is a bit much if you're going
to bed to sleep. If however, you're going to bed, but not to sleep,
the applause can be highly encouraging, but I digress).
With musical and lyrical bits that hearken back to a younger Joan
Armatrading and a more power-packed Tracy Chapman, Loyd has
earned the growing tide of praise for her more than 170 live
performances. Humor, honesty and undeniable talent combine to
provide you with all that you ask for. And then some. |
