Enviously poppy, and able to hook the listener in the first 30
seconds of each track, Before Braille are quickly building a
world of their own. With influences that are apparent (yet
mysteriously veiled in their own technique), this band from
Arizona quickly establish a firm footing in the world known as
rock. The opening build of the album, "Prelude: Secret no. 7"
hints at moods and emotions Texas Is The Reason used to
conjure up. Just when you're ready to hear more, the track
ends.
"The Spanish Dagger" is a jumpy number with a heavy feel not
unlike Jimmy Eat World. Keep in mind it's not a slight in the
least to mention Before Braille and Jimmy Eat World in the
same sentence. These kids grew up in the same region of the
world, and with the quality of attack Before Braille shows in this
tune, one wonders why Jimmy Eat World holds the reigns - this
musical style must be in the Arizona water.
The band's newest single, "A Cinema Spine" has a great lyrical
bounce. Flowing over the guitar riffs melting/molding it all
together, vocalist David Jensen shines like the brightest of
shooting stars. In fact, he says it best in the repetitive part of
the chorus, "Crash land / Resist / Re-define a dire
need."
One of the most remarkable songs on The Rumor
is "Twenty Four Minus Eighteen." The layers and textures of
the guitars and vocals make this track stand on its own - once
again only 30 seconds into the song - the listener has to fight to
keep the song playing. That is, you want to go back and hear
the beginning again, because it's just that good. If you are
able to let the song continue, you won't be
disappointed.
Look for more Before Braille records in the near future. The
band has said they have a goal of recording and releasing
every song they write. Of course, that means they'll have to
take a break from the road, and they seem to be enjoying that
more with every show they play. |
