You know that you're too old for a show when in the span of
an hour you see at least a dozen kids being dropped off by
their parents and an equal number of kids in line with
parents in tow. This was the case for the Daphne Loves
Derby, Waking Ashland, Quietdrive and Agent Sparks tour.
So let me just preface that I was there to see Agent Sparks.
But before I could see my newest favorite band, I had to
stand through two local openers.
Asher, from Chandler, AZ provide rich, white kid emo-rock,
yet sadly lack the pop collar. It's Like Love is what would
happen if Motion City Soundtrack and All-American Rejects
had a musical love child who happened to possess all the
musical talent of Ashlee Simpson.
Finally, Agent Sparks got to play. I'm always apprehensive
of the lone girl in bands. Always in the back of my mind I'm
thinking "girlfriend." But for Agent Sparks' Stephanie Eitel,
vocals and keyboards, that couldn't be further from the
truth. Although after watching her interaction with
vocalist/guitarist, Ben Einziger, it would be easy to misjudge
because they have amazing on-stage chemistry.
From the get go, the audience didn't know what to make of
Agent Sparks' brand of indie rock. Even with their single "Mr.
Insecurity," a song full of new wave disco beats and dance
hooks, the crowd was still lack luster. But you can't really
blame the crowd; they came to listen to emo rock, not the
next big thing on the indie music scene. Thankfully the band
didn't let the crowd bother them - they didn't rush through
their set and they only got better as they continued. I was
sad to see them leave, but only because I knew nothing
good could follow. And I was right.
I left to go outside once the lead singer for Quietdrive began
his Mick Jagger-cum-William Beckett [The Academy Is...]
posturing and dancing. I looked at him and wondered if he
ever hit himself while swinging the microphone around. I
was half tempted to stay and see if I could will it to happen,
but I decided to cut my losses and head outside.
I remained there the rest of the night until the rest of my
friends and I agreed that we couldn't take anymore emo and
left. So, Agent Sparks, I implore you to tour with some band
more fitting to your music stylings and caliber. I have made
a list of bands that I would like to see you play with:
Autolux, Controller. Controller, The Rogers Sisters, The
Rosebuds, The Eagles Of Death Metal or The Morning After
Girls.
