Kicking off the night was local band, Asleep In The Sea. It
was like listening to a kindergarten class' spring recital. Can
someone please explain to me when singing off key became
en vogue? It is possible to have quirky, off-kilter songs yet
sing in some sort of key that matches the song and
preferably in a note range that doesn't cause dogs to bark.
Unfortunately, Asleep In The Sea has not found that
range.
Up next was Dallas-based The Deathray Davies. After the
previous band I was hoping for some music that didn't give
me a headache. The Deathray Davies brought back some
classic rock riffs and the drum solo.
They were far more entertaining than the previous band and
even if the music wasn't entertaining, the projections behind
them were. Sometimes it looked as though the people on
screen where singing. It amused me. And they had a song
about Merle Haggard - probably the first and only.
Headlining the night was The M's. If the name is unfamiliar to
you, give it a couple of years. If the band keeps going at the
rate of excellence that they've been on, they should be
turning heads on the mainstream indie music scene. But
tonight, however, The M's weren't turning too many heads,
or I should say there weren't too many heads to turn. The
band was playing to about two-dozen people and half of that
was made up of the other bands.
This was my first time seeing The M's and I wasn't sure on
what to expect from their live show. Their current album,
Future Women, is full of strings and horns -
something that is not easily packed into a van and a trailer -
but the songs on the album sound just as amazing live.
