I've attended some pretty small shows before: The kind of
small that the audience consists of the other touring bands
and a few friends and family. Sadly, Irving had about half
that with the opening band leaving after their set - and
taking most of the audience with them.
The opening band was Full Of Grace - comprised of female
vocals on keyboard and guitar with a drummer and a guy
who played the lap steel. The vocalist had a Cat Power/Feist
quality over their folksy, alt-country tunes. But it wasn't the
music that got my attention; it was the band interaction - or
a lack thereof. When you were little did you ever go over to
a friend's house to play and the parents started fighting.
Then you were forced to sit down to dinner with them as
well? That's the feeling Full Of Grace was giving off. It was
definitely awkward.
Fortunately, Irving helped to erase that residual awkward
tension with their indie, toe-tapping pop. The audience,
mostly comprised of The Irving Friends And Family Fan Club,
were already well-versed in the awesomeness of this
band.
They opened with their current single, "Situation," and
played all of my favorites off the new album, Death In
The Garden, Blood On The Flowers. They did an
amazing job and looked like they were having a good time.
It can't be easy for a band to play to such a small audience.
So I hope the next time they come through Phoenix, they'll
have a bigger audience and I will be able to dance without
being totally embarrassed.
