Tucson, AZ, is not exactly the place one would expect to find
the latest British indie "It" band, Art Brut. But that's exactly
what we got, along with hometown Le Cerca and San
Francisco's Birdmonster.
I can't remember if I had seen Birdmonster prior to this
night. There was something all too familiar about them -
sexy boys from San Francisco singing some good ol'
Americana rock n roll. HmmmmÉ. What other band fits this
profile? Oh, yeah, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
I think I would have remembered seeing them as they truly
are memorable. Birdmonster is fun to watch, even if the
crowd stayed an easy distance away from the stage. The
four-piece seemed to have fun on stage - there were
tambourine-offs, spastic dancing - doing that whole
playing-right-into-each-other thing - and then the lead singer
would crouch down and stick out one leg and sort of hop
around. I don't know what the name of that move is, but it's
impressive. He is obviously a professional at it.
In a complete change of pace - and country - came Art Brut.
There was an anticipatory rush to the stage yet I somehow
found myself on the front row, with the largest, drunkest
man at the show behind me. From the opening of the
apropos "Formed A Band," I couldn't hear Eddie, but that
was fine since the man behind me did his best to sing along,
accent in tow.
After "My Little Brother," I moved closer to the bar, away
from the crowd, where I was able to hear the band - and
more importantly, watch the craziness that surrounds the
band - even if the band itself isn't too far out there. I was a
little disappointed in that respect.
The band was calm and certainly didn't do anything out of
the ordinary. With the exception that the bass player, Fredie,
the lone female in the band, was quite possibly the best
dressed band member that I have ever seen - looking
amazing in a black strapless dress and boots. She had some
very vocal admirers. I think the band leaves the drunken
theatrics to the audience, who worked a drunken mosh pit
the entire night.
The band played an hour-long set and added a nearly
thirty-minute-long encore. I had no idea that they had that
many songs - they played almost everything off their current
album and more than a few new ones. I'm not going to
make any bets as to how long the band will be around, but
they certainly are entertaining to watch.
