I had seen The Helio Sequence play once before about two
years ago. When I saw that they were playing at Modified in
Phoenix, I hoped that it was to promote a new album. Sadly,
that was not the case, but I still went for the chance to see
them play again.
Along on the tour was Crystal Skulls. I had heard their single
"Baby Boy" and I appreciated the back to basics rock'n'roll
that they offer - a mix of current indie and '70s rock. They
reminded me a bit of Youth Group. They were entertaining to
watch and got the crowd ready for Helio
Sequence.
I'm going to say it now, with there being only two people in
the band I am still amazed that Helio Sequence sounds so
amazing. Tonight's performance started off with a little bit of
drama - monitors not working and something about a wet
line, I don't really know, but it took 20 minutes to sort out. I
was glad that they got it worked out because Helio Sequence
is a band that you shouldn't hear on a crapped-out sound
system.
The Helio Sequence are probably one of the few bands that
you have to see live. Sure, it's fun to see your
favorite band, but The Helio Sequence is one you
need to see. First off, drummer Benjamin
Weikel looks like Animal from The Muppet
Show. I know that I can't be the first one to notice
this, but it's true, right down to the flailing arms and gaped
jaw. It's no wonder he's so skinny - not only does he play
the drums, he also mans the computer loop for each song.
That's a lot of moving around.
Secondly, Brandon Summers looks really good on stage. He
has a certain ease about him that makes it very ease to
focus and pay attention. And he also plays the harmonica
with distortion. It's pretty awesome. Awesome is a good way
to describe The Helio Sequence...along with loud. This is a
band that isn't kidding when they play at 11, so be sure to
bring your earplugs.
