I'm going to preface this show review by stating that the
night's performances of Peachcake, Foreign Born and Aloha
were severely hampered by the crappy sound system.
Everything that was sung into the microphone came out
sounding like the teacher from Charlie Brown cartoons. I
was greatly disappointed as this was my first time seeing
Aloha.
I had been informed that Phoenix-based Peachcake have a
cult-like following. If that's true, I will gladly join their
commune because they were one of the best local bands
that I've seen. Or maybe I'm just saying that because they
gave me - and the rest of the audience - free noisemakers.
Whatever the case, they were delightful to watch. It was like
being at the circus - minus the clowns or high wire acts.
Their music is akin to the Unicorns, the Faint and a little like
Moldy Peaches. Even though I could barely hear them, I
liked them.
Following the circus was Foreign Born, whom I had never
heard of and as far as I'm concerned still haven't. The
music, about the only thing you could hear, sounded great.
Nice 1970's rock-revival quality. And I would have loved to
know what they were singing about. I'll definitely see them
the next time they come through town.
Now the big disappointment of the night. All week, I had
prepared for their show. I had been listening to Some
Echoes and saying little prayers for them to play
"Brace Your Face." They did...and I couldn't understand a
word of it. The mumbling performance, though, did not deter
me nor the audience from having a good time.
I enjoyed watching T.J. play the marimbas and Tony do
triple duty at vocals, guitar and keyboard. Even with a lack
of audible vocals, the band was still amazing - they are
amazing musicians and seem to embody their eclectic mix of
rock, psychedelic and jazz.
