Despite varied popularity, each band in tonight's lineup
performed like a headlining crowd pleaser. Listening to the
generic punk rock voices of each band took me back to
distinct memories - all good. The truth of the matter is,
whether you're too hardcore anymore to skank in a circle pit
or you flat-out always thought Ska was crap and punk had to
be nothing more than anti-facist mayhem well, you're
missing the point.
Always a good time, Reel Big Fish and MxPx put on a show
filled with energy. Both bands had a natural comic banter
between songs and spoke with the crowd, personalizing the
show. It amazed me, despite a repertoire of dozens of
songs, that they could take virtually any request and play it
as if it were rehearsed as part of the set all along. MxPx put
the most movement into their set, getting the crowd pumped
up. By and large, they took requests and even sang Happy
Birthday to an adoring fan. Reel Big Fish seemed to pull hit
songs from each one of their albums as part of their set
whereas MxPx seemed to play mostly recent songs and a
few classics.
The lineup is entertaining. It's been most of a decade since
I've seen that many people in a crowd dance and mosh
despite security guards and lack of air conditioning.
Everyone's attitude was pure fun which was a nice reminder
and change from the usual, dime-a-dozen hardcore shows.
Whether or not this music requires talent is simply not a
question. It's friendly and energetic. It's making fun while
having fun. No one is watching. Go a little crazy. Trade in
your hardcore ninja kicks for a skanking good time. It's just
for one night. You won't regret it.
