Racist Kramer played their very first show at Salt Lake's Broken Record (also known as Todd's Bar and Grill). I have to admit that I've been longing for some good old punk rock. Maybe I'm getting old or maybe I'm still just too young to join the realms of the "punk is dead" crowd - this nostalgic trip was one that I may never forget.

The minute they took the stage the entire room stood in anticipation. Racist Kramer was prepared with a 45-minute set - a perfect mix of cover songs and those sort of foot-tapping, arm- swinging, circle-pit originals. As I stood, watching the crowd dance and sing along to a cover of Lagwagon's "Mr. Coffee" (one of my favorites!), I had one thought, "This is all kind of shitty." It was shit indeed! The bar was shitty, the stage was shitty, and the venue's sound made you wanna kick someone in the knees...and yet it added to the atmosphere.

This is punk rock! You have to admit the shit is charming. The Cowboy's game was not on the television and the crowd was not kindly standing around foot-tapping or hardcore dancing two-by-two. This is unity - with break downs that make you want to break shit - and pop beats that bring you right back to an almost Ska-like skank.

I went into this show with no expectations even though I've known half of the artists through various bands for most of a decade, it's been years since I've seen any of them play. Who would of thought that lawyers and engineers would take time out of school to get back to their roots. But of course, that is the SLC Punk way.
