Kings Of Leon may come from humble beginnings - a small, rural town 30 minutes East of Nashville, TN - but brothers Caleb (pipes), Nathan (skins), Jared (slaps) and cousin Matthew (licks) Followill are about to embark on a North American tour as the opener for U2.
Just days prior to the release of their sophomore effort, Aha Shake Heartbreak, Kings Of Leon played a smoky, sold-out show at Nashville's dark and legendary Exit/In. The show featured songs from the new release and 2003's Young And Young Manhood.
Passion and zeal can sometimes be just enough to sway a crowd's opinion, but these elements aren't necessary. The song "The Bucket" has a rolling drum beat set to the timid vocals of Caleb, whose lyrics instantaneously become your dance partner. This song provokes the object of curiosity in a songwriter, for instance, "you kick the bucket I'll swing my leg." What's that all about? No one may ever know the truth, but once you hear this song live, you'll nod your head so hard that you'll think you wrote it yourself.
The highlight of the evening was "Four Kicks." This dead-straight tune talks about a man who's ready to fight. It's almost impossible to keep up with the hot licks Matthew puts out on his electric guitar.
Kings Of Leon's music is genre-less. Sure, if you're looking to purchase Aha Shake Heartbreak you'll find a copy in the rock section, but they make a sound that is considered to be unusual and defining. They've really dug into the depth of rock and roll and found a sound everyone's been looking for.
