It's a dark hazy night at the Exit/In in Nashville, Tennessee and special guests Ambulance LTD (Marcus Congleton - guitar and lead vocals, Benji Lysaght - guitar, Matt Dublin - bass, Darren Beckett - drums) take to the stage. They open the show with "Yoga Means Union," an Ohm-like sound of instruments colliding together with no vocals attached. Picture an indie-sounding Grateful Dead rocking out in Chuck Taylors, thrift store t-shirts and faded jeans to "Space."
Although Ambulance LTD has only released one LP, the nearly sold-out crowd is sipping on Pabst Blue Ribbon and singing along. The third song, "Anecdote," begins with, "Give him the metals to your chest and settle down for seven minutes rest." It's my opinion that this is a story of a guy who talks to a girl about a man who fell for her. The song ironically begins with a medic's tool electric shock pads. The songwriters' captures a guy doing whatever it takes to catch her attention and how she never gave him a second look.
The sixth song of the evening and as luck would have it the sixth tune on the LP. "Stay Where You Are," is about an admirer who follows, looks, listens and hangs on every movement of anything that grabs him. This song really got the crowd moving.
The evening's encore was a spellbinding version of Pink Floyd's "Meddle (Fearless)." I was a little disappointed because this was the same encore performed the last time they visited Nashville (this past fall), but nevertheless, those who haven't heard Ambulance LTD's take of this song were in for a real treat. The bands' fervent belief in the ballad also explains their nod to the Velvet Underground's "The Ocean" on their LP as the hidden track.
All in all, these New Yorkers have invaded my iPod and made a home in my CD case. If you're listening to the Shins, Postal Service or Pinback right now, then look for Ambulance LTD. Trust me you'll like it.
