Her Candane
Her Candane call Salt Lake City, Utah home. After a few
minor changes in members they still pack a punch worth
having in the hardcore scene. Despite the dissipating crowds
at The Apollo for the post-Warped Tour party, Her Candane
put in a performance so technical and tight the New York
Philharmonic could have accompanied them. Wouldn't that
be something? The lead singer rocked in XOk Clothing's
petite and oh so cute girl shorts. A man of great confidence,
he comes across in your face and shocking. He chooses to
say and do whatever he wants. He is god of the stage and
he puts that to good use.
The swaying and head banging of each break down seemed
wavelike and therefore choreographed. This was not a bad
thing at all. It's the type of movement that gets people in a
certain mood. I can never quite put my finger on it. It's that
mood where I want to run into the crowd, spin-kicking with
razor blade shoes, yet at the same time I could give a group
hug to just about any random group of strangers in the
crowd. It's that old punk scene feeling that we're all a part of
something, somehow. No one is a stranger. No one is an
enemy. And yet, everyone must die in some sort of self-
inflicted sense of karma.
Hardcore shows do that to me - I would like to do to
everyone exactly what I feel like I do to myself in the
darkest, most enlightening moments of my life. This is Her
Candane. This is Utah hardcore. This is what people travel
for miles, hours and even across states to see. Somehow,
here, it is unique and I encourage everyone to take part in
this addicting meaning of life, and life's meaningless - all at
the same time.
Cigarettes
Featured at this year's 2005 Warped Tour as well as a
post-Warped Tour event, the Cigarettes know how to throw a
party! Lead singer Heather Naylor is a vixen, an obvious
candidate for the Courtney Love look-alike award when on
stage. She knows how to rock. She knows how to roll. She
knows how to work the vibe of being the only female on
stage. She makes Raggedy Anne the doll-world's sex
symbol. $%#& Barbie!
The Cigarettes are from Los Angeles. They have a
grunge-friendly sound with punk tinges. A basic four-piece
band with a female lead singer, they seem like nothing new,
yet their performance is eye-catching and foot tapping. It
was one of those shows where upon arriving, all I wanted to
do was sit down and take it in. I had no plans to participate,
but I found myself running across the dance floor, spinning,
and jumping on various members of the crowd in a
combined attempt to crowd surf and mosh. My only
explanation is that the energy came from the music. I was
awake! I felt alive.
Heather has an energy that's intimidating. Afterwards, she
stepped into the ladies room as I was leaving and I couldn't
even open my mouth for any sense of complimenting her
performance. I just scurried past her and gave an ill-bent
smile to my friend like, "I had no idea what to
say!"
Emaneht
Emaneht!!! You look at the name and think to yourself, how
clever? But how clever is it really? Very! It's just the words
"the name" spelled backwards and that's exactly all it
means. Yet, somehow Emaneht's music puts it's own
meaning to the word as if it was something you'd studied on
a sixth grade spelling test and never quite understood 'til
now. It took me just a few moments to realize the name and
the comedy of it all.
Emaneht comes from Northern California (San Jose). A true
American Idol, Krista knows how to belt a note. She knows
how to get on all fours and dance it like Madonna. She
caresses the stage. She teases her band members, and
makes love with the crowd. She reminds me of the lead
singer of Save Ferris, Monique Powell. With each step she
seems grounded, in control and somehow conquers the
stage time and time again. She owns it!
Dean (lead guitar) has a natural rock and roll stance. He too
entices the crowd. Everyone, from all musical backgrounds,
applauds the band. Their set is quick. It rolls right along.
They seem to make no mistakes and waste no time. It is
nothing but performance - practiced and
preached.
Sponsored by Sezn clothing and Kronik energy drink, their
music is spreading as their fan base doubles and triples
throughout the West and Southwest touring three and four
times a year. They've made an entirely entertaining and
interactive website that emulates their cynical and comical
personalities. I encourage you to check it out (www.emaneht.com). And for all their
younger, girly fans out there - you'd be interested to know
that they rocked out the red carpet for the opening of
Princess Diaries 2. How cool is that?
Emaneht is the type of band you'd expect to see rocking the
faces off of Hilary Duff fans or headlining (yes, I said
headlining) for Ashlee Simpson. It's Green Day meets Kelly
Clarkson. It's Emo trodden punk rock. It's Heroine Bob and
Trish, the Queen of the scene (see the movie: SLC
Punk). If this is something that interests you at all,
check them out!
