I came to the From Autumn to Ashes, Armor For Sleep,
Emanuel, Biology show for one reason, to see Armor For
Sleep. When I first saw the band play, I was unimpressed
and bored, leaving their set early to get a drink. However, I
saw them play again at Warped Tour - this was after
becoming acquainted with (and a fan of) their music - and I
was eager to see them play somewhere that was not
Warped Tour. So, when I got the opportunity to see them
again, I jumped at it.
The night started out normally enough. New York-based
Biology opened the show. The band had never played in Salt
Lake City and it showed because the audience had very little
reaction to Biology's brand of hardcore/post hardcore. I
thought they sounded like Showbread.
Fortunately, Emanuel got the crowd into a frenzy. This is
screamo at its finest. I had more fun watching the band play
and being in contemplative thought as to how they keep
their fingers from slipping when they are
sweating.
In between Emanuel and Armor For Sleep came the highlight
of my night: the tech guy. Most sound checks are boring -
full of "testing"s and "check"s, but not this time. His sound
check was full of commentary on the temperature of the
room, the religious climate of the city and asking for more
cowbell - that one reference won me over.
After the tech guy's one-man attempt at bemusement Armor
For Sleep came to the stage. My first impression of the band
was all but forgotten once they broke into "Dream to Make
Believe." Prior to the show, I was curious as to how they
were going to do songs from their new album, which is a
concept album. They played the songs as individuals and out
of order, which didn't phase the fans who sang along as the
band rocked out.
This time around, they put on an amazing live show. I
enjoyed watching them, especially vocalist Ben Jorgensen
who plays guitar while standing on the balls of his feet - it's
really quite endearing. The band got the audience into a
mosh pit frenzy by playing "Awkward Last Words," "Car
Underwater," "Slip Like Space," "I Have Been Right All
Along" and "The Truth About Heaven."
The heat (read: the smell of individuals who have yet to
learn the wonderful benefits of deodorant) was getting to me
and I left to get fresh, cool air. I sat on the grass and
listened to From Autumn to Ashes play. I was thankful to be
outside and not in that din. As far as I was concerned, there
was no way anyone could have topped Armor For Sleep's
set, except maybe if the tech guy did more Will Ferrell
Saturday Night Live skits.
