Zao

Club Ice
Salt Lake City, UT

Yet again, a last minute venue change from Salt Lake's oldest venue - SaltAir (still renovating) to Club Ice, which is as cliche as it sounds and might as well be a club from a scene in one of the Ninja Turtles movies with Vanilla Ice singing in the background. This club is not meant for large shows and is easily over packed.

Although shows here are not often worth it, Zao, a truly unique band - self-proclaimed as Christian metalcore - is worth forging the crowds on the tips of my toes trying desperately to not miss any action.

Currently touring as the opening act for In Flames, Trivium and Devildriver, Zao stands, I'd say prideful (in a humble way) of being the polar opposite of what Christian parents would be expecting their kid's to be seeing. I think this is what speaks to the masses. Here we have a band with intense hardcore breakdowns, growling and screaming, yet they will never fail to take a moment and share with you why they are here and what they believe as their purpose.

Despite what may seem music mayhem to some, Zao plays in the name of God and they are entirely sure of their beliefs to the point where you can't pass this off as some sort of attention-getting-rebellion. Their strength to stand as a Christian's individually and as a band despite what people may say or think and despite the way they may look or the aspects of their performance, this is what makes them inspiring. This, I think, is what makes their fans so dedicated.

You may not become one of the dedicated followers from simply listening, but their performance is definitely worth seeing. It is, to say the least, inspiring.
