Andrew Norsworthy and Jared Wood call Alaska home,
although they seem to be more at home on the road.
Constantly touring, they often come through Utah always
playing with a local favorite, Palomino.
These two bands always present an intimate set - full of
familiar faces, sing-alongs, low lighting and a disarray of
emotional ambiance. During each set, I turned to watch the
crowd. The majority of the people were mesmerized. You
could see the stage lighting reflecting in their admiring eyes.
Everyone else seemed to be having a good time, treating it
more like a house party at a cozy venue on a snowy night in
Provo.
They might as well treat this place like home. The Velour
and its location is a home, familiar to hundreds of
show-goers in Utah County because it is run by Utah's one
and only Corey Fox. Corey Fox is the soul reason why Utah
County even has a scene. He has dedicated himself to
maintaining the progression of music through Utah. He has
run virtually every great venue Provo has had over the past
fifteen years, adding his personal touch to these venues
complete with a leopard skin lamp shade, red velvet
backdrop, stained glass windows, original Coca-Cola adds,
tarnished trinkets and carousel horses. Having been open
just shy of a month, the Velour already harbors so many
great bands and memories yet to come.
Andrew Norsworthy and Jared Wood present a show like no
other. The passion in which they play their acoustic guitars
thrusts you into a fury of emotional motivation, only to bring
you back to an instant calm where the lyrics leave you in a
haze of personal memories, easy to relate to and all too
familiar. Everything about this duo is fine tuned to perfection
- their vocal harmonies, the key changes, the tempo, the
dynamics. These two are true musicians, living it, breathing
it and on a seemingly never-ending tour to share it. This is
their life.
Palomino, being great friends of Andrew and Jared, present
themselves as a great host and headlining band. Raised in
Michigan, lead singer, Brinton Jones is one of the greatest
lyricists I have come across. Heart broken and genuine, he
allows his fans to sing along as well as having Andrew and
Jared join the band on stage.
The crowd was blown away by their performance of their
song, "Shades Of Gray," Andrew and Jared joined them for
the final chorus. With four guitars blazing into the most
perfect harmony, Brinton Jones referred to this moment as a
"guitorchestra." Rightfully so, these boys are undoubtedly
some of the most talented people I have ever seen or had
the privilege to know.
Filled with passion and a sincerity that breaks your heart, all
musical tastes and opinions aside, you will fall in love with
these bands and I encourage you to become a part of their
family.
