Salt Lake City's leading indie promotion group, The
Kollective, put on this show at the Avalon Theater which is a
new, great venue equipped with a large stage, seating and
standing area, elevated floors so you can see whether you
have a generally petite nature or lurk above the average
crowd height. The venue is also equipped with fantastic
sound.
First to hit the stage, christening this new venue for me, was
Action Reaction with an exciting and consistent performance.
They didn't appear to slow down or get tired. In that regard,
this show almost seemed backwards as far as bands you
should have been there to see. Chiodos and Action Reaction
were the most entertaining; the most into their crowds and
they seemed to really enjoy being on stage. They had an
energy.
But I guess that's the way of the rockstar - the more fans
you have, the more powerful you are. Therefore you
deserve the "I do what I want" attitude. Suddenly, as
rockstars, you also have full freedom to write half-assed
lyrics and put minimal movement into your performance.
That was not necessarily the case Monday night. But, for
those bands who are still acquiring fans and not yet sick of
touring, they put on a show full of energy, provoking
scenesters to join their ranks and dedicate themselves as an
eternal fan.
However, after an absolutely entrancing Chiodos
performance, filled with jaw-dropping guitar talent, Boys
Night Out seemed to spend the first half of their own set
attempting to measure up - singing just slightly out of their
comfortable range and style or trying to match the near
perfection of Chiodos vocals. One question seems to perplex
me - why oh why is there a chick in a band called Boys Night
Out? There's nothing wrong with chicks and this one, after
she got over perhaps a bit of stage fright, seemed to enjoy
her job as keys and backup vocals, but they are called Boys
Night Out, regardless?
Armor For Sleep began with a mellow set, but played
powerfully and with passion more so than a raw energy or
obvious performance. Their set was intimate and virtually
everyone at the venue seemed to be singing along. I
suppose that's the general feel you get for a headlining
band, but being late on a Monday night with a young crowd I
was surprised to see them all stay. It's good to know the
scene has some ethics once again.
With a few days left for this tour, be sure to check this lineup
out!
