The night played out as such: Matchbox 20 rip-off, crowd
surfing, alcohol and hecklers - and
disappointment.
Yes, Spill Canvas still sounds like a mini version of Matchbox
20, but without the radio play or the annoying persona of
Rob Thomas.
I think the Plain White T's had the best set of the night. With
their radio-friendly brand of pop-rock and video-friendly
good looks, the band had the most audience participation. I
can't remember a time in my life when I saw that many
pairs of feet come flying at my head.
The band was feeding off the crowd surfers. With each na•ve
girl that was thrust into the air, the band rocked that much
harder. Believe me, it was a lot of rocking. Noticing the lack
of remaining (and willing) crowd surfers, the band brought it
down by having lead singer Tom Higgenson, play "Hey There
Delilah" solo.
On the exact opposite side of the crowd participation was OK
Go. The only participation the band had was a drink order
from the lead singer, which came back to him wrong - no
coke mixed with his whiskey. The band did get a little bit
more of a reaction thanks to their
used-in-the-background-of-every-show-on-MTV hit, "Get
Over It."
As their set came a close, the band was heckled, turning
their set into a not so family-friendly event with language
that would make Dave Chappelle blush. But the night did end
on a high note for them when they recreated their video for
"A Million Ways" live. If you've seen the video then you
know how funny it is and it's only more so when done
live.
Headlining band Motion City Soundtrack was a bit of a
disappointment. I expected a show that would somehow
emulate lead singer, Justin Pierre's hair - big, out of control
and probably a little dirty. Instead, I got a set that was more
like a comb-over.
